Creating traffic flow profiles in England's highways

I worked in the London Mathematical Laboratory under Colm Connaughton's supervision in designing a method to create traffic flow profiles in England's highways. We came up with two methods, one based on STL by Loess (seasonal trend decomposition) and other based on Fourier Series.

The following is an example of the absolute error obtained throughout the day for many methods tested in several highway links in England:
